Nightshade: A SimLit | Chapter 16: I Can Explain
Amelia was horrified when she walked through the double doors leading back inside from the balcony and saw her brother staring angrily at her. "A-Alexander?" she stammered.
"I can't believe he would do that to you!" Alexander snapped. "Who does he think he is, using my sister as a midnight snack!?"
"Alexander, I can explain--"
"No, you can't! I know you like Onyx, but you can't cover for him!" Alexander yelled.
"Alexander, mom's going to hear us! Calm down!" Amelia cried.
Alexander frowned. "Good! She was right about him... he's dangerous, Amelia! Stay away from him! Obviously, he doesn't see you as anything more than a big, juicy steak..."
"I gave him permission, Alexander!" Amelia exclaimed, but then lowered her voice so that no one would hear.
"What? Why?" Alexander asked. "Why did he want to--"
"He didn't," Amelia interrupted. "But he had no choice. He was really thirsty, and his mom won't let him use any alternative methods... she's forcing him to drink from people. And he couldn't stand to do it, so he just tried going without. ...It didn't work. He wasn't even Onyx... he was... something else."
"That's awful." Alexander replied, his voice softening. "Sorry. I guess I overreacted... what do you mean he was... something else?"
"I don't know. It's like... when I looked into his eyes, Onyx wasn't there anymore. Like he was..."
"Some kind of monster?"
"No! No, he's not a monster." Amelia sighed. "He was acting really crazy, and like he couldn't control himself. I don't know how to describe it, but he just wasn't... him. He couldn't help what he was doing..."
"Yeah, I get what you mean." He grew quiet, before suddenly lighting up. "Hey, I have an idea!"
"What?" Amelia asked.
"I remember in one of the books about vampires I read, which I didn't take seriously because everyone said they were just fiction, it said that alternative sources were plasma fruit--"
"And where's he going to find that? That's probably what his mom said no to." Amelia sighed.
"--AND fish and frogs!" Alexander said excitedly. "Can't he just tell his mom he's out hunting humans or whatever, but just... go to a pond and get some fish or frogs or something?"
Amelia grinned. "Alexander, you're a genius!"
"I know," he replied with a smirk. "But thanks for the compliment."
Amelia rolled her eyes, but her smile didn't falter. "I have to go tell him!"
"Now? We're in the middle of a blizzard outside, Amelia. I'm shocked you didn't get blown off the balcony by the wind."
"I'll be fine!" Amelia exclaimed, and ran past her brother, downstairs, and out the front door.
Amelia raced as fast as her feet could carry her across the street, to Onyx's house. She approached the front door, but quickly changed her mind. "What if his mom's home?" she muttered to herself. Quietly, she walked to the side of the house and peered into his bedroom window.
'There he is,' she thought, and tapped loudly on the window. "Onyx!"
Onyx was wide awake. He couldn't think about anything but what he'd done to Amelia. 'How will I ever forgive myself?' he thought, but was snapped back into reality by loud tapping on his window. He opened his eyes and looked up, shocked to see Amelia peering into his room. 'What the heck!?'
"Amelia!" Onyx exclaimed, and got up out of his bed. "What are you doing? You're going to freeze to death!" He exclaimed, and she rolled her eyes. 'Well, at least she heard me...'
He got up out of bed and walked to the front door, opening it to see his friend standing there with a big grin. "...Amelia?"
She walked inside and shut the door behind her. "Onyx! I have great news--"
Onyx frowned, and Amelia grew quiet.
"W-Why are you here?" Onyx asked, and his eyes trailed to the bite marks on her neck. 'How could I have done that to her? What was I thinking!?'
Amelia, still smiling, walked to the dining table and sat in a chair. He reluctantly followed and sat beside her.
"Well, I--"
"You still want to see me, even after... that...?" Onyx interrupted. "Aren't you... afraid of me now?"
"What? No, of course I'm not afraid of you! Why would I be? You're my best friend, Onyx. I trust you."
"But why? Why do you trust me?" Onyx continued. "I'm a vampire. You know... a bloodthirsty monster..."
Amelia's voice softened. "You're not a monster, Onyx..."
"I am! Only a monster could have hurt you!" he cried. "You didn't deserve that..."
"Onyx..." Amelia sighed. "It's okay. You did what you had to do, and I know you didn't want to. You know you didn't want to. But you'll never have to again!"
"Huh? What do you mean?" Onyx asked. "I already told you, my mom won't let me--"
"You can use frogs and fish!" Amelia exclaimed with a grin. "Alexander was telling me about it! All you have to do is tell your mom you're going to go out and chomp on people or whatever, but what you actually do is hunt down a few frogs or fish! There's a pond at the park, you know!"
Onyx lit up. "Really!? I had no idea!"
"She'll never know the difference!" Amelia laughed.
"Thank you so much, Amelia!" Onyx exclaimed, and stood up. "In fact, before mom gets home, I think I'll go try that out. You should really go home before your family notices you're gone..."
"Yeah," Amelia said, and stood up as well. "See you tomorrow night?"
"As always." Onyx replied.
The two friends shared an embrace before heading their separate ways.
"I can't believe I'm doing this," Onyx muttered to himself, approaching a log near the pond at the park. "Well, here goes nothing..."
Reluctantly, he reached inside the log. His hand touched something slimy and he took a deep, shaky breath, suppressing a scream.
'It's just a frog. It's just a frog...'
Onyx opened the palm of his hand to see a small creature."S-Sorry..." he muttered, already feeling bad for what he was about to do to the innocent frog.
He closed his eyes and sank his fangs into his next meal, trying to ignore his queasiness. 'Eww! Gross!' he thought. 'Amelia tastes much better than that... wait, no, that's a bad thought! Well, I guess it's something to drink, at least...'
Poor boy has to eat frogs now, hahaha; but it's all in the name of love : P
ReplyDeleteYou thought kissing a frog was bad... try eating one! :P
DeleteHahaha love this comment chain. And I'm so proud of Onyx for being so determined not to hurt humans... he's just the sweetest.
